We’ve set a departure date! MAY 30TH, 2011 we will be flying from Kansas City to Santiago, Dominican Republic.
So what will our first months in the Dominican look like? Pray for spongy brains to absorb Spanish quickly during our initial 6 weeks of language study, as we work towards professional level communication. Pray for God’s grace as we then search for a place to rent near our new church family in Santiago. Then we will spend several months conducting a formal assets/needs assessment in the community, which is a critical step in our long-term ministry approach. This will include building relationships with university professors, church leaders and key members in the community in order to finalize our physical therapy and church ministry plans. Pray for wisdom, discernment and friendship building!
Our support for the first year of ministry is nearing full funding (about 87%) and we continue to share our story and pray for additional annual/monthly pledge partners. We hope to add new individual partners to cover the remaining ~$300/month of our budget, to support a sustained commitment in the Dominican Republic. Please consider this opportunity. We are happy to announce that thanks to God’s provision and all of you, our short-term outgoing expenses are met! Other preparations now keep us busy, such as finding health insurance, information about Dominican residency, and final goodbyes to friends and family.
Currently, we are in California, but will be traveling to Nick’s family in Omaha and to Kansas City yet before we head out. We are enjoying the spring weather, and already missing our usual garden planting and our gardener friends in Kansas City. We look forward to a great growing season at our Dominican home.
We are so thankful for a new season of life and ministry. We look forward to sharing this journey with you, and knowing you in yours. The next time you’ll hear from us will probably be to announce our arrival in the DR! In peace and with gratefulness,
Nick and Laurie
