December 2012 – Holiday Greetings & Maxima’s Story

The warmth of family kept the chill out in Omaha.

Wintry Greetings!

Can you tell that we’re visiting the US this Christmas season? Brrr!, but we are enjoying the warmth of family and old friends instead. What a gift!  We write with news from the DR.

Good news from the DR

Maxima is a church member who was bed-bound, from an autoimmune disorder, when we arrived in the DR 1.5 years ago. Two US teams came to replace both of her hips, and Laurie provided in-home therapy before, during and after the surgeries. Now Maxima is up and back to work as a hair dresser! After several years of not attending services, we were able to use the car that your support provided to drive her to church throughout last year. Just before we left for our US visit, she was able to walk on her own to church 5 blocks away!

The Gospel story continues in her. Now that she is working, she can provide for the two family members who struggle with mental health and tithe at church. She even pulled together her entire community to help fund and drive her elderly neighbor to physical therapy after he had a stroke a few months ago.  Now he too is walking again!

A friend from our church, Nego, had two hip replacements and many therapy sessions. Once bedbound, she can now walk to church.

This brings to mind a song, for anytime, but for Christmas especially:

God is here! God is here! No more sorrow- God is here!

God is here! God is here! Swords into plowshares- God is here!

God is here! God is here! Love one another- God is here!

Thanks for all of your love! What a gift it is to join you in this work.

Love,

Nick and Laurie
